Statement on optimization of prices of WMS, VPS, VPS SSD, VPS ON, WEDOS Cloud and dedicated servers and tariff adjustment

Dear Customers, due to a sharp increase in costs, especially electricity prices, we are forced to optimize the prices of our WMS, VPS, VPS SSD, VPS ON, WEDOS Cloud and dedicated server services. For these services, the price of electricity used to be a small cost item, but in recent months this has become the dominant price component. The current prices for these services are a loss for us (the cost of operation is higher than the price at which we sell them), even though we are trying to use energy-saving technologies as much as possible.

We do not increase all prices or items. We even reduce the price of some of them, which is unheard of these days.

Optimization – service price adjustment is based on a thorough analysis of hardware and infrastructure usage. Based on this analysis, we have also increased some parameters for services. Some of this has been made possible by technical progress (upgrading infrastructure, new technologies) and some by natural growth (more connectivity). The new services we offer at a discount can save many of our customers a lot of money.

Price optimization will be carried out for existing customers from 15. June 2022, but only after the subscription period has expired (e.g. if your service expires in six months, you will not pay anything extra during this period). For new services we will perform the optimization from 1. June 2022.

How we have progressed with data storage and management on the 3PAR StoreServ Storage 8450

There’s a lot going on here. We are building our decentralised WEDOS Global network, preparing to launch the first WEDOS Global Protection service on it, and the development of oil cooling is still going ahead, but these are not all big projects. Last year, we migrated our service data to the new 3PAR StoreServ Storage 8450, which was very challenging and we still ran into the occasional problem a few months later. In addition to significant simplification, increased stability and speed, this new solution also opens the way for us to take many services further.

Phishing campaigns and what to watch out for

During the month of March, we saw two major phishing campaigns targeting our customers. The goal was to gain access to customer administration and email boxes. Thanks to the proactive approach of our customers, we were able to monitor both of these campaigns in detail and prevent the misuse of services by customer accounts that fell for cyber fraudsters.

A peek into the WEDOS Global Protection administration

The first service we will launch on our global WEDOS Global network will be WEDOS Global Protection. It has an important task – to protect all our customers’ websites from various types of attacks and our infrastructure at the same time. Over time, we will make the WEDOS Global Protection administration available to everyone so that they can adjust the protection settings to their liking.

Strongest DDoS attack of 2022 rewrites last year’s record

In recent weeks, cyberspace has been a war zone. Of course, not everything is Russia’s fault. The current chaos is also being exploited by a number of organized groups, so we are seeing more phishing, application layer attacks with extortion, and traditional DDoS attacks. But let’s not forget that Russia demonstrated its new HermeticWiper data-erasing malware early in the war. It quickly spread beyond Ukraine. It can affect you too. So our challenge still stands – back up your data to yourself wherever you have it!

Building WEDOS Global – First infrastructure sites agreed

When the strongest attacks in the history of the Czech Internet came at us in April 2021, which managed to clog all 3 of our 100 Gbps routes for a short time, we understood that the rules were changing. Despite upgrading the hardware of our protections, strengthening our infrastructure and implementing new processes, it was only a matter of time before short attacks of this magnitude became longer or even permanent attacks.

WEDOS stands for Ukraine!

At the very beginning of Russia’s war with Ukraine, we officially and publicly condemned this invasion of Ukraine by Russian armed forces. Instead of a video from our server room, we put a big flying Ukrainian flag on our website. This flag was also put on our Russian website wedos.ru. We have issued statements in Ukrainian colours on various subpages, we have prepared an article Ongoing cyber war may affect you too, get ready for it! and sent it to all our customers by email. We couldn’t stand by and each of us wanted to do something. At least help in some way and show your disapproval.

February night DDoS attacks exceeded 133 Gbps, peaked at 300 Gbps

On the night of 18.02.2022 to 19.02.2022, we experienced the strongest DDoS attacks on our infrastructure since April 2021, when we were hit by probably the strongest attacks in the history of the Czech Internet. Back then, for a brief moment, it managed to clog three 100 Gbps routes. This time it wasn’t so much about power but length, and apart from a few customers, no one noticed the attacks.
